The best beaches near Winchester

As a family we have always loved going to the beach and being by the sea. We all sail and so we’re at our happiest down on the coast. Here are our favourite beaches within an hour drive of Winchester.

Highcliffe Beach

This (mainly) sandy beach will make you feel like you’re in the South of France, of even, Australia. A deep beach which never feels too busy, shallow water and lots of cafes by the nearby car parks.

Milford-on-Sea

If pebbled beaches are more your vibe Milford-on-Sea is the place to go. This beach is also one of the closest to Winchester at only 40 minutes drive away. There are groins along the beach for you to set up camp by and the sea is lovely for swimming in. We love heading down early on a hot day for breakfast on the beach followed by a morning swim.

Netley Beach

A half an hour drive away this is lovely for a walk. It overlooks the heart of the Solent so swimming isn’t quite as appealing as other options, but it’s wonderful for a picnic or BBQ.

Mudeford Beach

This stunning spit is home to a collection of beautiful, upmarket beach huts. Accessible via car (and walk or small train) or boat, Mudeford is the ideal family day out.

Studland Bay

Studland Bay is slightly further away from Winchester, but is still very doable for a day trip. Catch the chain ferry over to this National Trust wonder of vast beaches and heathland. There are water sports available and also a nudist area to be aware of! If you’re looking to treat yourself, why not have lunch at THE PIG - on the Beach?
